When considering your options for a mechanical device to move up and down stairs for someone who has mobility disabilities, you have several options. Two of the most affordable options are stair chairs and wheelchair stair lifts. Both of these options work in a similar manner. The lift is attached to an already available stair railing, and moves up and down the railing using a mechanical drive.
Both wheelchair lifts and stair chairs can be installed on either straight or curved staircases. However, it is much more expensive to have them installed on a curved stairway. Still, when compared to the price of having an elevator built, a chair lift will be considerably more affordable. When compared to cage elevators, wheelchair lifts and chair lifts are also much quieter, especially if you choose a model that has a rack and pinion drive.
If you or a loved one have difficulty standing and moving from a wheelchair, then a wheelchair lift will probably be the best choice of the two options. With a wheelchair lift, you will wheel the wheelchair onto a platform and securely attach it before using the lift. This means the person will not have to struggle to get out of the wheelchair and into the chair lift, nor will you have to worry about having another wheelchair available once the person has moved up or down the stairway.
One advantage of chair lift models is that they are generally cheaper than wheelchair lifts. In part, this is because there are many more manufacturers and much more competition and selection when it comes to stair chair lifts. You also will more likely be able to find an used or refurbished chair lift model, if you would like to save even more money.
Both chair lifts and wheelchair lifts are important devices to help the disabled and elderly retain their independence. Although the purchase of a chair lift involves a considerable financial investment, the ability to move about freely is priceless.
